Delivering a Connected Air Purifier from Industrial Design to Production

In this product category, what the consumer perceives is decided on the device and in the software at the same time

Our client is a consumer appliance manufacturer developing a connected air purifier with integrated humidification. They engaged Yalantis as the single supplier for the complete product rather than for the software alone – covering the enclosure, the electronics and the mechanical design through to manufacturing readiness, alongside the cloud backend and the consumer mobile application.

That decision reflects something specific about connected appliances. The behaviour a consumer experiences rarely lives cleanly on one side of the hardware-software line. Whether the air-quality reading shown in the app corresponds to the air actually in the room depends on sensor selection and placement, and on how air moves through the enclosure. Whether a filter warning arrives before the filter is exhausted depends on how consumption is modelled on the device and reported to the cloud. Whether the appliance keeps behaving predictably through a home-network interruption depends on how state is buffered on the device and reconciled afterwards.

Split across two suppliers, each of those questions becomes a negotiation. The device vendor specifies what it can measure; the software vendor builds what it can display; and the gap between them surfaces late, as a product that reads the room inaccurately or warns about a filter after it has already stopped working.

Because Yalantis held both sides of that interface, the specification and integration work normally carried out between a device supplier and a software supplier was handled internally – as an engineering decision rather than a contractual one.
